The Cornerstone of Building Strong Communities: Family-centered Homes
The family is the center of a home, and with 90,000 homes sold across the continent, Mattamy Homes operates with a vision that sets the company apart. Working with landowners, the company develops fully planned communities that encourage thriving neighborhoods that are good for the homeowners and provide exceptional return on investment.
As the largest privately held home builder in all of North America, Mattamy sets a new standard for person-centered property development.
More Than Just Building Houses
“What’s really fascinating about this business is that it’s a very local business—you have to understand people locally,” said Founder and CEO Peter Gilgan. “We ask people to participate in helping us figure out exactly what appeals to them, so the homes and communities we design will best help people feel good about themselves and good about their lives. A home is a very personal possession.”
Currently, Mattamy Homes has 16 divisions—eight in Canada and eight in the US. The company prefers to begin by purchasing raw land, working through the entitlements, and then beginning the development process. This ensures full control of the end result.
“We take a long time at the front-end of the development process, and don’t go fast right out of the gate just to get a return on the investment,” said Gilgan. “We take the time to ensure real satisfaction for the customers, and a good long-view return for the company. That’s one of the big differences between us and a publicly traded company.”
The philosophy that building a home starts with a conversation is the cornerstone of the “Mattamy Way”. The development of a new community of homes starts with an individual and then grows to the scale of a neighborhood.
This focus on community, rather than rapid development based on a nationwide study and predetermined design, is what has grown the company into being the largest home builder in Canada.
Supporting Global Advancement
The Peter Gilgan Foundation applies these values of community, including respect for the individual and support for charities in Canada and around the world. Recent donations have included multiple multimillion dollar contributions to Canadian hospitals, education and community development programs in Kenya and Tanzania, and sponsoring Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission.
Gilgan explained, “As I started to formalize this idea and create a foundation, I started to think about where we might make the most impact and get the best social, environmental, and economic return for the investment. We’re investing in projects that are supporting real advancement in the world.”
Working with You
“Our vision is simply to be the best home building brand in North America,” stated Gilgan. “We don’t say the biggest, we say the best.”
To achieve this vision, Mattamy Homes seeks landowners interested in partnering in housing developments, or professional bond investors with a shared vision of excellence.
